Survivor team shuts down ‘winner’s edit’ theories; Jeff on Tiffany

According to Probst, Tannenbaum “finds the people that are going to play, and they really are essentially the stars of the show”; Van Wagenen is “my partner on the show who is responsible for the story” when the team is “out there shooting for 26 days”; and Barefoot is “one of the few OGs who started shaping these shows in the very beginning — and has continued to shape them throughout our 25-year run.”

Van Wagenen said the production team agreed on a “celebration” theme early on for Survivor 50. “That was our north star for what Season 50 was going to be,” he stated. “We were looking for a group that was going to celebrate. Tiffany was a big part of that. We were looking for a season that was going to basically be a love letter to the show and to the fans. And for us, we felt it immediately when we got to the beach.”

The panel vehemently shut down the fan theory that there’s a “winner’s edit” on Survivor where the editors work backwards from who wins to help shape that person’s story.

“There is no winner’s edit,” Barefoot explained. “That’s just not how you put a show together. Sure, when we start on the season, we know how it plays out. But in each episode, we’re locked into what happened that day or two or three, however long it is, so we can jump around multiple points of view from each contestant. All along the way, each contestant thinks they’re going to be the winner, and so we’re in that world in that episode.”

The editor added, “The whole season is a mystery. Each episode is a mystery. Who’s going to get voted out? You can play around with what to include and what not to include, but we want you to understand each character’s journey throughout. We want you to understand why the first person got voted out, and why the person who wins, wins. The format of the show and the strength of the show is that you know each contestant.”

Tiffany laughed, “When I stepped on that beach, nobody was winning but me. We all think we’re going to win when we get to the beach.” The editors simply choose to “play around” with that confidence in order to create the most entertaining version possible.

Tannenbaum revealed that Probst FaceTimes all of the potential contestants before the process is complete. “They have a 10-minute conversation with him, and he’s shooting the s–t with them,” the casting director said. “He’s so good at letting their guard down if they’re feeling nervous, and getting them comfortable. It’s a beautiful thing for the casting process, because they go to casting finals, and they made it to that stage, and they go in that room, and they feel so much more comfortable.”

Tiffany reflected on her own FaceTime call from the host: “I could not believe that was really happening. I’m like, ‘Is Jeff Probst really on my phone right now?’ But to Jesse’s point, it made all the difference when I walked in that room and there’s 40 people in front of me. I’m like, ‘Well, I talked to Jeff on FaceTime, so we are basically friends!’ There’s a level of comfort that is established that I’ve never seen done anywhere else.”

Van Wagenen admitted that “one of the great gifts CBS gave Survivor” over the past 50 seasons was expanding the episode length from 60 to 90 minutes. That change happened in Season 45 and continues today.

“I think our show has gotten infinitely better with 90 minutes because of the small things,” the executive producer said. “We have room for so much more character development. I have rejoiced in 90-minute episodes. One of the things that I love about Survivor is, like any great show, it’s drama, it’s comedy, it’s sports, it’s thriller, it’s whodunit, it’s all these things. That’s one of the things that we do well — and we’ve done really, really well — since we moved to 90 minutes.”

Emmy-nominated cinematographer Scott Duncan also earned a shout-out from the panel. “The cameras in the mud. I’m like, ‘How is this a thing?'” Tiffany laughed. “I remember being so shocked the first time I played. There are cameras in places that you guys are not imagining. It’s so cool because it doesn’t interfere with the challenges at all. The [cinematographers’] minds are so creative. I would have never thought to put a camera inside this lizard that I’m holding right now. It’s insane!”
