HBO’s newest comedy is reaching new heights. Larry David’s Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness has just what Curb Your Enthusiasm fans have been wanting, and it’s one of the biggest titles on streaming.

The seven-part comedy premiered on June 26 and is only three episodes in. However, according to Flix Patrol, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is already crushing the Top 10 charts across the world as the third most-watched TV show. In the United States, the series is staying steady at No. 2 on HBO Max.

Larry David Shines As Various American Historians

Just in time for America’s 250th birthday, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness includes a star-studded cast and explores major events in American history through David’s observational humor. The Emmy-winning comedian and actor portrays historians and politicians from throughout history, such as Alexander Graham Bell, Meriwether Lewis, and Founding Father Robert R. Livingston.

The series has received mixed reviews, earning just a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but some critics have praised David. Carol Midgley of The Times UK called his “performances in various guises” the highlight of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.

Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, HBO’s hit historical comedy quickly became a streaming hit. It helps that the guest cast has a wide range of star power. President Barack Obama appears as himself, while Richard Kind, Chris Parnell, Jurnee Smollett, Alan Tudyk, Henry Winkler, Kaley Cuoco, Jimmy Kimmel, Jerry Seinfeld, Rita Wilson, and the late Rob Reiner, among others, play various figures and side characters.

Larry David’s Perfect Curb Your Enthusiasm Replacement

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness marks David’s first series he’s written since Curb Your Enthusiasm ended. The HBO sitcom initially ran from 2000 to 2011 before being revived in 2017. It officially ended in 2024 after 12 seasons, capping at 120 episodes.

Curb Your Enthusiasm received critical acclaim throughout its run and it was extremely popular, bringing the laughs for over two decades. David plays a fictionalized version of himself, and while he plays versions of historical figures for Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, the hilarity is still very much there, with each episode containing around four sketches.

Additionally, fans are able to watch some of their favorite Curb stars in this new series, such as Jeff Garlin, J.B. Smoove, and Susie Essman. Meanwhile, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld alum Jeff Schaffer directed the seven-episode series.

Over the years, David has been attached to some of the most hilarious projects, aside from Curb, which had a perfect series finale. He co-created Seinfeld and served as a writer on Saturday Night Live in the ‘80s. David hosted the variety sketch series twice and made a handful of surprise cameos, notably portraying presidential candidate Bernie Sanders during Season 41.

New episodes of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness air on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, streaming on HBO Max.
