Families celebrate on the South Lawn with new activities, including live chicks and expanded interactive exhibits.
WASHINGTON — The White House South Lawn is filling up with families this Monday morning as the annual Easter Egg Roll returns for its 148th year, featuring a new patriotic theme tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The event, open to families with children 13 and younger, is drawing thousands who gained entry through a free online lottery.
Once inside, children will take part in the traditional egg roll while also exploring dozens of activity stations set up across the lawn.
This year’s celebration is placing a stronger focus on history, service and innovation, reflecting the 250th anniversary of the United States. Activities include a NASA-led lunar exploration experience, an artificial intelligence creation station and opportunities for children to write messages to U.S. troops.
Organizers also added a sensory-friendly egg hunt, expanding access for families with different needs.
Among the new additions this year was a “Hen to Home” exhibit, where children could see live chicks up close.
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump is scheduled to speak to the crowd from the White House balcony before joining families on the South Lawn for the festivities.
The Easter Egg Roll is a longstanding White House tradition dating back to 1878 during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes.
Families will leave the event with commemorative eggs bearing the signatures of the president and first lady, marking this year’s milestone celebration.
