The WNBA has kicked off its 2026 campaign and on Friday night, expansion side Toronto Tempo will visit the Los Angeles Sparks in an early-season matchup at Crypto.com Arena. Toronto continues to embrace the excitement surrounding the franchise’s inaugural season after becoming the league’s first Canadian-based team. The Tempo built their roster aggressively during the offseason, selecting key contributors in the expansion draft before adding veterans Brittney Sykes, Temi Fagbenle and Canadian star Kia Nurse in free agency. The franchise also drafted former UCLA standout Kiki Rice, who is expected to play a major role in the backcourt right away. Marina Mabrey headlines the offense after signing a multi-year deal, giving Toronto an experienced scorer and playmaker to guide the new team.

Chemistry remains a work in progress for the Tempo, but Friday’s game offers an opportunity to secure a statement win before a difficult road stretch. Toronto has shown flashes offensively, though consistency and ball movement remain areas of focus as the team enters the game at 1-1 so far.

Los Angeles comes into the season with far different expectations. The Sparks revamped their roster in hopes of ending a lengthy playoff drought, bringing franchise legend Nneka Ogwumike back to Los Angeles while holding on Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby and Erica Wheeler. The Sparks also acquired Ariel Atkins in a major offseason trade and welcomed back Cameron Brink from injury who has been dominant through two games despite the team being 0-2.

Despite the talent, Los Angeles is still searching for rhythm after a tough opening week. The Sparks believe their lineup can contend in the postseason, but developing cohesion quickly will be critical against a hungry Toronto squad eager to earn another historic victory in the opening week of play.
