(WSPA)—The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for portions of western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina on Monday morning.

The warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. as a severe thunderstorm moves through the region.

Weather forecasters in Greenville-Spartanburg identified radar-indicated rotation in a storm located 13 miles south of Forest City at 8:16 a.m. The storm is moving east at 45 mph.

The warning includes southeastern Rutherford County and southwestern Cleveland County in North Carolina In South Carolina, the alert covers northeastern Spartanburg County, northwestern Union County and Cherokee County.

The storm is expected to be near Chesnee and Cowpens National Battlefield around 8:20 a.m. It is projected to reach Patterson Springs and Earl by 8:40 a.m.

Other impacted locations include Cliffside, Cherokee Falls, Draytonville, Thicketty and Saratt.

Impacted areas could see damage to roofs, windows and vehicles. Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed and significant tree damage is likely.

Potential impacts from the storm included dangerous flying debris for anyone caught without shelter.

Residents are advised to take cover immediately by moving to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Safety instructions included staying away from windows.

The National Weather Service requested that any reports of damaging winds, hail or flooding be shared by calling toll-free at 1 (800) 267-8101. Reports can also be submitted through the agency’s Facebook page or on X using the hashtag nwsgsp.
