PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The opening round of THE PLAYERS Championship was suspended due to heavy rain in the TPC Sawgrass area at 12:09 p.m. (all times ET), then resumed at 12:30 p.m. It was later suspended for darkness at 7:37 p.m. and will resume Friday at 8:50 a.m. The second round will begin as scheduled at 7:40 a.m. on Friday.

7:37 p.m.: The first round is suspended due to darkness. Four players have yet to complete their first round, including co-leader Austin Smotherman, who will have a birdie putt on No. 9 from 14 feet, 9 inches.

12:30 p.m.: Play has resumed after a 21-minute weather delay. There is no rain currently in the area of TPC Sawgrass, but there is a potential for later weather systems Thursday afternoon. All Round 1 afternoon tee times have been delayed 30 minutes.

12:27 p.m.: Rain has already moved over the course, and players are preparing to resume play.

12:09 p.m.: Players are currently being held in place as the system makes its way over the Ponte Vedra Beach area.

The 52nd edition of THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass gets underway on Thursday, with weather potentially becoming a factor in the opening round.
