The Shrek franchise is currently undergoing a massive revival that includes Shrek 5, the first mainline entry in 17 years, set for theatrical release in 2027, and a dedicated Donkey standalone movie, slated for 2028. The fifth film is bringing back the beloved all-star trio of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, as well as some high-profile newcomers, with the aim of reigniting the blockbuster franchise, following the critical and commercial success of the 2022 spin-off Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – but is Shrek 5 the end of the story, or the beginning of a new batch of adventures with the grumpy green ogre?

Dana Carvey let slip on a recent episode of his Fly on the Wall podcast that the future is bright for Shrek and co. The Wayne’s World star recalled a conversation he had with his long-time collaborator – and Shrek voice actor – Mike Myers, in which he confirmed that the franchise is far from being done yet. According to Carvey, Myers told him directly, “We’re doing two more.” This suggests that DreamWorks Animation is quietly planning a sixth installment to follow next year’s highly anticipated Shrek 5, which is set for Jun. 30, 2027.

While DreamWorks has not yet issued a public announcement regarding Shrek 6, Carvey’s comments heavily imply that the studio has mapped out a storyline to expand the franchise beyond the fifth film – which screenwriter Michael McCullers previously pegged as a “pretty big reinvention” designed to deliver a fresh take on the classic characters. While plot details are heavily guarded, it would appear from the new cast additions (and a divisive first look), that the forthcoming chapter will follow Shrek and Fiona as they attempt to navigate life with their now-adolescent ogre triplets in the magical world of Far Far Away.

Alongside Shrek 5 and a potential Shrek 6, Eddie Murphy has confirmed that DreamWorks is actively developing a standalone Donkey movie, following Shrek’s motor-mouthed sidekick on a solo adventure alongside his dragon family. The project serves as the third major spin-off in the Shrek cinematic universe, trotting the same path as the successful Puss in Boots films. The movie is projected to land in theaters sometime in 2028, which means that fans of the franchise have plenty to look forward to in the years ahead.

The revitalization and expansion of the Shrek franchise is hardly a surprise, as it is a massive commercial engine, having grossed nearly $4 billion globally across six theatrical releases. It was an instant sensation when the first film opened in theaters in 2001, and it has maintained a dedicated following in the 25 years since. It has spawned three direct sequels (soon to be four) and two spin-offs, with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ending a hiatus of more than a decade and proving that the franchise still has immense drawing power, as it grossed nearly $484 million worldwide against a production budget of $90–110 million. Its performance seemingly served as a vital catalyst for a multi-film expansion of the Shrek universe, which includes Shrek 5 in 2027, a Donkey spin-off movie in 2028, and by the sounds of it, Shrek 6 further into the future.
