DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ:DKNG) stock has been navigating a complex landscape following its Q2 2026 earnings report, leaving investors to weigh short-term margin volatility against long-term strategic expansion. On August 17, DraftKings announced the launch of syndication for a proposed $600 million Senior Secured Term Loan B credit facility. The net proceeds are earmarked to repurchase a portion of its existing Convertible Notes due 2028 and for general corporate purposes. Alongside the Term Loan B, DraftKings secured commitments for a new $750 million senior secured revolving credit facility maturing in 2031 to replace its existing $500 million revolver maturing in 2029. Management expects the new facility to remain substantially undrawn at closing, significantly enhancing liquidity and extending its maturity profile.

This financing move follows a mixed Q2 2026 financial report. Revenue fell 4.6% year-over-year to $1.443 billion, while the company posted a net loss of $67.6 million ($0.14 per share) compared to net income of $157.9 million in Q2 2025. Adjusted EBITDA declined to $114.6 million from $300.6 million a year prior. The top-line squeeze stemmed primarily from roughly $80 million in customer-friendly sports outcomes (such as the NY Knicks’ playoff run and FIFA World Cup results), alongside intentional over-investment in new customer acquisition. Normalized for these items, revenue rose 10% year-over-year. DraftKings maintained its full-year 2026 guidance of $6.5B–$6.9B in revenue and $700M–$900M in Adjusted EBITDA, with core operations on track to deliver ~$1 billion in EBITDA before accounting for a $200M–$300M growth investment in Predictions.

Could DraftKings Inc. (DKNG) Stock Turn Margin Pressure Into a Bigger Growth Opportunity?
Could DraftKings Inc. (DKNG) Stock Turn Margin Pressure Into a Bigger Growth Opportunity?

This sets up a key question: Is the recent margin pressure an indicator of structural unprofitability, or a temporary bump while DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ:DKNG) aggressively scales its core and prediction markets?

Wall Street sentiment remains divided. On August 10, Guggenheim lowered its price target to $33 from $35, keeping a Buy rating after updating models for Q2 results and the reaffirmed 2026 outlook. On August 11, Citi raised its price target to $32 from $30 with a Buy rating, highlighting an “unprecedented customer acquisition opportunity” in predictions that expand DraftKings’ total addressable market.

Bull Case

DraftKings’ bull case is supported by strong free cash flow and scalable unit economics, with trailing-twelve-month free cash flow of approximately $616 million providing capital to fund product innovation and marketing. Customer acquisition increased roughly 75% year over year in Q2, while enterprise customer acquisition costs improved by approximately 25% relative to internal expectations. Meanwhile, vertical integration and product diversification are expanding DraftKings’ addressable opportunity, with Predictions’ annualized volume surging from $2.3 billion in April to $11 billion in July. The launch of DKeX alongside FCM approval further enables the company to capture economics across brokerage, exchange, and market-making activities.

Bear Case

DraftKings’ bear case centers on elevated financial leverage, with leverage above 3x equity limiting operational flexibility and increasing exposure to interest-rate and refinancing risks. Inconsistent profitability also remains a concern, as a return to net losses highlights the company’s sensitivity to hold rates and promotional spending. Meanwhile, regulatory uncertainty surrounding Predictions could delay rollouts, increase compliance costs, or reduce the expected returns from the company’s expansion into new markets.

Institutional Positioning (Insider Monkey Data)

In Q2 2026, 54 hedge funds held positions in DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ:DKNG), down from 61 in Q1 2026. Cliff Asness’s AQR Capital Management held 29.67 million shares valued at $749.4 million (+30% change), while Spruce House Investment Management held 9.65 million shares ($243.8 million, representing 7.17% of its portfolio).

What Investors Should Watch Next

Investors should monitor holding rates in upcoming quarters, the conversion of Predictions volume into high-margin revenue through DKeX, and whether full-year Adjusted EBITDA lands within the $700M–$900M target range.
