The following contains spoilers for Tracker Season 4, Episode 2, “Switchback,” which aired on CBS on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

Tracker confirms in “Switchback” that Melanie “Mel” Day’s (Cassady McClincy Zhang) mystery will become a main focus in Season 4, replacing the narrative role that Justin Hartley’s leading character, Colter Shaw, and his family’s story have held so far. Tracker Season 4 returned to CBS in October, resetting the series with a fresh setting as production moves to Los Angeles.

Tracker audiences noticed immediately that Season 4 felt like a reset, focusing more on Colter and standard missing-persons cases, like in Tracker Season 1. However, Tracker Season 1 was also compelling because it laid the groundwork for Colter’s family mystery. In Season 4, Mel will take over, or at least share, that place in the story with Colter.

Mel Narratively Replaces Colter As Tracker Season 4 Explores Her Mother’s Murder

The mystery of what happened to Colter’s father, Ashton Shaw, is one of the most compelling parts of Tracker Season 1. The pilot establishes how Colter’s father was killed when he was younger, and how he trained Colter and his siblings to survive on their own in the woods, establishing the basis for Colter’s missing persons work.

While Tracker Season 4 is still fleshing out Ashton Shaw’s story, the series has answered the most pressing questions about his death: who killed Colter’s father, why, and what government work made him so paranoid. That said, Ashton Shaw’s mystery is mostly resolved, and Tracker Season 4 shifts gears, using the same formula with a different character.

Throughout Tracker Season 1, Colter’s family mystery weaves into the weekly cases, keeping audiences engaged in a steady overarching story. That said, Tracker Season 4 seems to be employing the same formula with Mel, the assistant Reenie Green (Fiona Rene) hired in Tracker Season 3, as she asks her boss to look into a new development in her mother’s murder.

Mel’s mother’s murder was never solved, leaving the family mystery fresh and unexplored, just like Colter’s was at the beginning. So Mel steps into an important role Hartley’s character has traditionally filled. Her story revives the series with a fresh, family-focused case centered on one of Tracker’s supporting characters, replacing the series’ overarching mystery rooted in its core cast.

Colter and Mel share a key similarity. They have both spent years wondering what happened to one of their parents after losing them to a traumatic and mysterious incident when they were just teenagers. Colter is already a sympathetic protagonist. He will likely be even more willing to help with the case due to his shared experience with Mel.

When Tracker Season 3 introduced Mel, she briefly explained how her mother, an Army logistics officer, was shot and killed in her car at a rest stop when she was 16, saying the case was never solved. Reenie officially starts digging into the mystery in “Switchback,” looking into Eric Jeffries, a military officer with ties to Mel’s mom.

Mel tells Reenie that she signed up for text alerts when her mom’s name comes up online at the top of Tracker Season 4, Episode 2, saying she recently came across the name of a military officer who worked with her mom in the weeks leading up to her murder. Mel has looked into it, but his records are blocked.

So Reenie pokes around and makes a discovery that propels the case forward at the end of Tracker Season 4, Episode 2, getting information from one of her contacts that changes the story. Reenie discovers that, contrary to the belief that he was honorably discharged, Eric Jeffries has been reported AWOL, confirming their first lead.

Jeffries could become the prime murder suspect, or he may be another victim in a larger conspiracy. Regardless, the cold case has the hallmarks of what made Ashton Shaw’s mystery so compelling, including potential government ties. So Mel’s mystery is replacing Colter’s, as the case could easily span at least the first half of Tracker Season 4.

Tracker is ultimately being resourceful, fleshing out its supporting characters to fill out the story while returning to the tone that has traditionally worked for the show. That said, the series couldn’t keep centering on Ashton Shaw’s mystery after it resolved its most enticing elements, and hopefully Mel’s family story feels just as exciting to watch.
